Supporting Colleagues Observing Ramadan at Lauriem Complete Care

A guide for care assistants in the community and support staff in our offices

Ramadan is an important and meaningful month for many of our Muslim colleagues. It is traditionally observed as a time of spiritual reflection, self‑discipline, increased worship, charitable giving, and connection with family and community. It also brings people together to share meals and support one another, ending with the celebration of Eid‑Ul‑Fitr.

At Lauriem Complete Care, we recognise that both our community‑based care assistants and our office support teams play essential roles throughout the year, and many may continue to observe Ramadan while supporting the individuals and families who rely on our services. It is important to us that every colleague feels respected, understood and supported during this significant time.

What Ramadan Means for Colleagues Who Are Fasting

Many Muslim colleagues may choose to fast each day during Ramadan, abstaining from food, drink (including water) and smoking from dawn until sunset. Alongside fasting, Ramadan encourages:

  • Personal reflection and self‑evaluation
  • Increased prayer and worship
  • Acts of kindness and charity
  • Strengthening family and community relationships

Not everyone will fast, and some colleagues may be exempt for religious or health reasons. Each person observes Ramadan in their own way, and it is important that we respect individual preferences without making assumptions.

Supporting Fasting Colleagues Across Lauriem Complete Care

Our care assistants often work varied hours, visit multiple clients, and may experience long days with early starts or late finishes. Our office teams also manage busy schedules and provide essential support behind the scenes. Simple, thoughtful adjustments can make a meaningful difference.

Ways to support colleagues during Ramadan include:

  • Being mindful that fasting colleagues may be managing disrupted sleep due to early morning meals or late evening prayers.
  • Offering flexibility where possible, such as considering shift preferences, meeting times or break arrangements.
  • Showing consideration when eating or drinking around colleagues who are fasting.
  • Providing quiet space for reflection or prayer where this is feasible.

By promoting understanding and awareness, we strengthen our culture of respect and compassion across Lauriem Complete Care.

Why Inclusion Matters

When colleagues are able to practise their faith comfortably in the workplace, it contributes to greater wellbeing, motivation and job satisfaction. An inclusive culture benefits everyone: it supports stronger team relationships, better communication and a shared sense of purpose.

Acknowledging and supporting colleagues during Ramadan is one of the many ways we uphold the values that shape who we are as an organisation.

Our Commitment at Lauriem Complete Care

We are proud of the diversity within our workforce and the communities we serve.
